This Week in Robotics: 8/7/2023

Updated: Aug 19, 2023

Robotics is a rapidly growing and changing industry. Each week we put together a collection of stories to help keep you up to date. Unfortunately, we can't cover everything each week, but we try to provide updates that we think are relevant to your career in robotics.

The autonomous sidewalk delivery robotics company, Serve Robotics, announced this week that it plans to go public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). Prior to the merger, Serve Robotics raised $30 million led by big names like Uber, NVIDIA, and Wavemaker.

DoBot Robotics, a developer of collaborative manipulators, signed a letter of intent with VenHub, who develops fully autonomous and robotic-operated convenience stores. This partnership offers a great opportunity for DoBot in a unique application for robotics manipulators.

Fernride, an autonomous electric truck startup, raised $31 million in Series A funding this week. There are numerous companies developing autonomous trucks; however, Fernride takes a novel approach with collaborative, remote control of their autonomous vehicles.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved permits for Cruise and Waymo to charge fares for passenger service in San Francisco. Prior to this approval, the companies operated with limitations on when they could operate and if a safety driver was required to be present.

Seeking to expand business operations, Skyline Robotics has closed on a $3.35 million funding round. Skyline Robotics' OZMO is the world's first high-rise, window-cleaning robot.

Birdstop, a company that develops drone systems for inspection, has raised $2.3 million. This funding will likely be used to begin scaling the company.
